Meet Some of Our Members
Here is a list of some of our members who have chosen to make their profiles public.
Membership Info | FAQs
How much does it cost to join Spartanburg Toastmasters? Toastmasters is an excellent personal and professional value proposition. Membership dues are only $75 semiannually ($12.50/month), due before April 1 and October 1 each year - and prorated when you join so that your dues fall on the usual semiannual cycle. New members have a one-time-only $20 fee to process your membership application.
How long are the meetings? Most club meetings are 1-1/2 hours long. We gather at 6:45pm and our meeting begins promptly at 7:00pm. We usually adjourn by 8:30pm.
Are members required to attend every weekly meeting? While regular attendance is the best way to learn and grow in the Toastmasters experience, we understand that members have busy lives outside of Toastmasters and that personal schedule conflicts may interfere with meeting attendance occasionally.
What is expected of new members? We assign an experienced member to mentor new members when they join to help them get started. We urge members to serve in each meeting role at least once every six month period.
How are club officers selected? Officers are elected annually and serve for the term of July through June.
What happens at meetings? We ascribe to founder Ralph Smedley’s philosophy of “We learn best in moments of enjoyment.” Each meeting follows an agenda which includes the following:
-
OPENING - The club's Sergeant-at-Arms will gavel open the meeting and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
-
CLUB PRESIDENT - Reads club mission and valuues; welcomes guests: conducts club business; and makes announcements .
-
TOASTMASTER OF THE DAY (TMOD) - The TMOD reviews the agenda and ensures a smoothly-run meeting. This includes the introduction of:
- Prepared Speakers. Typically, three members will give a timed speech on a subject of their own choosing as they complete projects in the online Pathways education curriculum.
-
TABLE TOPICS MASTER - The Table Topics Master leads a short session of impromptu speeches for which a topic is given and the selected audience member provides a 1-2 minute response. Guests are welcome to participate, if they wish, or just sit back and enjoy.
-
GENERAL EVALUATOR The General Evaluator leads the evaluation portion of the meeting, calling on reports from the Speech Evaluators and other evaluation team members, and then providing a final overall critique of the meeting.
- Speech Evaluators. Assigned members provide a verbal and written evaluation to each speaker, highlighting the strengths and offering suggestions for how the speech could be even better.
- Grammarian / Word Master. The Grammarian introduces a Word of the Day and displays the word and definition with a visual aid and provides a sentence showcasing how the word is used. He/she also monitors uses of the Word of the Day, mispronunciations, grammatical mistakes, non-sequiturs, malopropisms, etc, throughout the meeting, and provides a verbal report during the evaluation portion of the meeting.
- Timer. Each role has a time limit. At the end of each meeting segment, the Timer provides a report of which members spoke within their designated time allowances.
- Vote Counter. The Vote Counter collects and tallies the ballots after the Speeches, Table Topics and Evaluators portions of the meeting. In some clubs, he/she also collects feedback forms after each prepared speaker and provides them to that speaker's evaluator.
Will I have to speak if I visit a meeting? You will be asked to introduce yourself to the club . A brief 30-second introduction could include your name, how you found out about Toastmasters, why you came to this club's meeting, and any special interests you have. You may be asked if you'd like to participate in the Table Topics (as described above). At the end of the meeting, we usually ask guests to provide their feedback about the meeting.
A mentor is a guide who helps each protégé find his or her own way. Though there may be opportunities to coach, or give specific instruction, your most important job is to listen to your protégé, guide them to information and provide the support they need to reach their goals.
The Pathways guidelines for mentoring indicate that the mentoring process should last 6 months. If you and your protege complete the following action items in less than 6 months, then continue to be a sounding board for the protege for subsequent speech projects to complete the 6 month requirement.
